Peter Conser Home
The Peter Conser home is the restored 19th century home of Peter Conser, a former Lighthorseman and legislator of the Choctaw Nation. On the National Register of Historical Places, the interior of the home has been restored to reflect Conser family’s wealth and social position during the Indian Territory period.
Wheelock Academy
Located near Millerton, Oklahoma, Wheelock was the first Choctaw National Academy. The Academy was designated a National Historic Landmark by the National Park Service of the US Department of Interior in 1966.
Choctaw Nation
The Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma is the country’s third largest tribe. With annual cultural events and casino gambling the Choctaw Nation has something for everyone.
Five Civilized Tribes Museum
The Five Civilized Tribes Museum has exhibits featuring various aspects of the lives, history and culture of the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Muscogee (Creek) and Seminole tribes. The museum is located in the historic Union Indian Agency building in Muskogee, Oklahoma.
Spiro Mounds Archaeological Center
The Spiro Mounds are world renowned because of the amount of art and artifacts dug from the Craig Mound. The mounds were created by Caddoan speaking Native Americans with evidence of a culture between 850 A.D. and 1450 AD. The Spiro Mounds Archaeological Center features a wide variety of interpretive exhibits, viewing of the pre-historic Indian mounds, an introductory slide program and gift shop. The Spiro Mounds are on the National Register of Historic Places.
Cherokee Heritage Center
Located in Park Hill, Oklahoma, the Cherokee Heritage Center seeks to preserve the historical and cultural artifacts, language, and traditional crafts of the Cherokee. The Center offers an Ancient Indian Village, Adam’s Corner, genealogy database and the Cherokee National Museum.
Ancient Indian Village
The Ancient Village is an authentic recreation of a Cherokee settlement as it was prior to European contact. Cherokee craftspeople demonstrate ancient cultural practices such as flint-knapping, basketry, pottery, cooking, hunting techniques, religious and cultural practices.
Adams Corner
Adams Corner Rural Village is a collection of seven buildings which depicts a typical Cherokee settlement and everyday life in the 1890s before Oklahoma statehood.
Cherokee National Museum
The museum is housed in a native rock building design symbolizes a traditional Cherokee dwelling. The museum houses the permanent Trail of Tears exhibit, temporary exhibits, two art shows a year, and the genealogy center.
Ataloa Lodge Museum
Located on the Bacone College Campus in Muskogee, Oklahoma, the Ataloa Lodge Museum features more than 20,000 pieces of traditional and contemporary Native American Art. The collection is one of the largest privately owned collections of Native American history and culture in the US. The collection includes an impressive Kachina Doll collection, items of daily and ceremonial use, and Civil War memorabilia.
